Jesus Is Coming…Look Busy!

So, I have a confession. Even as 24 and 26 year old adults, when my brother and I know one of my parents is coming home soon, we hurry up and do whatever they asked us to do when they left. We had the entire time they were gone to do it, but we chose not to. So, it turns into a “Hurry up! Mom’s on her way home!” and we run around like crazy people putting in half-hearted effort to make it look like we did what was asked of us.  Maybe your grown up version is seeing your boss come into your office and closing facebook, twitter, or whatever social media you’re using to ignore your work. We all do it in one way or another.

A friend of mine has a sticker that looks similar to this:

How often do we do we treat our responsibilities as Christians like the chore list our mother left us before going to the store? Sure, people throughout history have claimed Jesus was coming back soon. How would our lives change if we acted like Jesus was really coming back soon? Would we have to run around like crazy people putting in half-hearted effort to make it look like we did what was asked of us?

Jesus told his disciples multiple times that He was coming back. He warned them to keep watch and be ready since they don’t know when He will return (Matthew 24:42,44).  We won’t know the day or the hour (Matthew 25:13) of His return.  They knew that one day, Jesus would come back; so, they got to work. They dedicated the rest of their lives to the work they had been given. It wasn’t just something they talked about when they met one day a week. Paul wrote “But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God. (Acts 20:24)

All I know is that I don’t want to just look busy when Jesus returns. I want to be busy.  Jesus gave us plenty of instructions on what we should be doing until He returns.

  1. Repent and turn to God (Matthew 4:17)
  2. Be the light of the world and let our light shine ( Matthew 5:14-16)
  3. Turn from our selfishness, take up our cross, and follow Him (Matthew 16:24)
  4. Go and make disciples. Baptize them; teach them His commands. (Matthew 28:20)
  5. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else (Luke 12:31)
  6. Follow His example (John 13:15)
  7. Love one another (John 13:34-35, John 15:17)
  8. He told Paul specifically to speak out and not be silent (Acts 18:9)

As we approach Easter, we get ready to focus on the death and resurrection of Jesus.  We remember that God loved us so much that He gave up Jesus, His only son, to take our place and die the death we deserved so we could spend eternity in Heaven with Him. Jesus was  mocked, beaten, and crucified. Most importantly, He was raised from the dead. We’re reminded that our God is greater than anything else in the world, including death.  This was the single cause the disciples were willing to die for. They knew how Jesus had changed their lives. They knew He was exactly who He said He was. Most importantly, they knew He was coming back. They didn’t sit around idly just passing the time. They lived every day like He would return any minute.

Do we really believe that Jesus is coming back? Are we living like Jesus is coming back?
Do we take His biblical mandates seriously? When He returns, will we be busy or just look busy?
